Education Beyond

Institutions

Education is one of the core pillars of our lives, and its influence spans our entire journey. When we’re kids, our ability to learn is like a superpower, thanks to our brains’ amazing plasticity. Today, I want to chat about my own experience because it’s not just about picking the right school, it’s also about being active in our kids’ education within the family.

Since I became a mom, my goal has been to give my daughter a well-rounded education so that when she sets off on her own adventures, she’s equipped to make the best choices. Over the past 7 years, I’ve nurtured her creativity, and emotional intelligence, encouraged independence and exploration, anything that contributes to her growth and lifelong learning.

I’ve always believed that no matter our circumstances or resources, we can enhance our children’s education with the tools we have. That means providing them with resources, activities, and experiences that let them unleash their creativity and maximize their potential.

Let me share my story, starting when my daughter was just 3. We began exploring her passions with a dance class in Buenos Aires, Argentina. Later, in Bogotá, she tried a dance academy nearby. But even though she showed interest, her true passion lay elsewhere.

Soon, I noticed her enthusiasm for painting. So, I put together a full kit for her, with markers, crayons, watercolors, and acrylic paints. I wanted her to have everything she needed to explore her creativity in her free time. Then, her aunt, a pro artist, started giving her virtual lessons to teach her more advanced concepts like depth, lighting, contrast, and color. It turned out to be one of her favorite activities, where she showed a lot of talent.

But painting wasn’t her only interest. We dabbled in music with different instruments until she fell in love with the ukulele. I found a virtual teacher in Colombia to teach her the basics. While she didn’t want to continue, she’s now into acrobatics and jumping all around. So, gymnastics will be her new extracurricular when she starts her third year of primary school.

Moreover, I was keen on giving her a second language to boost her future prospects. That’s why we moved from Colombia, exposing her to a new culture, language, and experiences at an early age. We also aimed to teach her a third language once she mastered English. To do that, I explored apps like Preply, where I found teachers with different subjects, prices, and schedules. For three months, she took Mandarin classes with a teacher from China. Although she didn’t continue then, who knows, she might dive into another language in the future.

When we step into the role of parents or educators, it’s essential to realize that education goes beyond classrooms. It’s in every aspect of our daily lives, from the little things like picking up litter to the significant ones like giving a speech.

To me, education is the bedrock of everything. By helping kids and teens discover their motivation, passions, and life purpose, we empower them to grow and work with passion in their chosen fields. Letting them choose their own path supporting their decisions, even if they differ from our preferences, ensures they’ll find fulfillment and meaning in their future pursuits.

Remember, we’re the architects of their education, both at home and in society. Our dedication and commitment shape future generations, giving them the tools and power to build a brighter future. So, don’t underestimate the impact we can make. Let’s seize every opportunity to nurture a strong, meaningful education in the ones we love the most. Together, we can push the boundaries of what’s possible in our children’s education.

How is Teaching Done

on the Beaches of Thailand

Tailandia

When you think of Thailand and its wonderful islands, you can only imagine a beautiful beach with white sand, crystal-clear water, and many relaxation and fun activities aimed at tourists. However, when I visited southern Thailand, specifically the island of Koh Lipe, I wanted to get closer to everyday life and explore how its inhabitants live since, like any population, there are families with daily study and work routines.

To understand a bit of the social context of this island, it’s important to clarify that the main source of income for this population is tourism, whether in hotels, gastronomy, water sports, among others. The majority of the island is populated by hotels, with only a very small sector consisting of houses for the locals. So much so that many adults only come to Koh Lipe to work, and at the end of their workday, they travel by boat (taxis) to nearby islands where their homes are located.

During my stay in Koh Lipe, I visited one of the few schools on the island, and one of my first impressions or surprises was that there were no doors delimiting the school; literally, both students and anyone else could enter and exit without a problem. This made me reflect a bit on the purpose of schools, which should be to provide a physical space for play and learning, and not a place to carry out activities with strict schedules. It should be the students’ decision to be there to learn and have fun.

As I continued my tour, I interacted with many children of all ages, joined in their games, and some of them even gave me a tour of the classrooms, showing me their books and study tools. Afterwards, I met with the school principal, who kindly took the time to discuss the current situation of the school and tell me about all the unseen characteristics.

It was at that moment that I understood the various issues that affect the educational quality of the students in this school. On one hand, the low budget for teacher salaries makes it difficult for many of them to make long trips from their homes to educate the children, resulting in a low professional demand for teaching positions. Additionally, due to the conditions on the island, there are occasional electricity failures, which affects the quality of internet needed by both students and teachers for knowledge acquisition and didactic tools for learning.

Another relevant aspect that we observed and discussed with the principal is the importance of teaching the students a second language, in this case, English, since the main economic source of the island and its surroundings in Thailand is tourism. For this reason, it would be enriching to have organizations and/or foundations that provide support to these schools with foreign volunteers who wish to contribute to the educational process of these children while enjoying their stay on this charming island.

Here ends my visit to this school, with many sensations and experiences that allow me to continue learning and understanding all the educational needs that exist in different places around the world. While for some institutions, having access to the internet and modern technology is basic and essential, for others, it is not. However, this is not an impediment to providing quality education to all boys and girls, and together, eliminating the barriers to learning.

Diversity in Bangkok:

Educationally Speaking

2018

Tailandia

Bangkok, the capital of Thailand, is an immense city with a population of over 9 million inhabitants. Consequently, there are many types of schools with diverse methodologies and categories. During my journey through Southeast Asia, I had the opportunity to visit a school in this city called Wat Chana Songkhram School. However, it is important to clarify that this experience does not represent the general characteristics of education in Bangkok and is only considered as a personal perception.

In contrast, in Southeast Asian countries, it is common for students to be proficient in multiple languages within the same school due to the different languages spoken in neighboring countries. In the case of Wat Chana Songkhram School, many students did not speak Thai as they were native to Vietnam, Cambodia, among others. For this reason, the school made efforts to provide the necessary support and adjustments to teach the language and enable equal learning opportunities.

On the other hand, I identified a similarity between education in Thailand and countries like Colombia, which is the high degree of religious influence in education. In Bangkok, approximately 87% of the population is Buddhist, which means that children participate in religious activities from an early age. Additionally, in some cases, schools are located within Buddhist temples. During my visit, while conversing with the school administrators, they informed me that temples frequently donated money to cover the additional expenses of students since the state only provided basic school supplies.

Another aspect of great interest was exploring the inclusion processes implemented by this institution. Specifically, when inquiring about the population with disabilities, I was informed that there were 10 students with cognitive disabilities. However, upon inquiring about the work done with this population, I understood that inclusion was limited, as the children were segregated into two classrooms and did not interact or participate in the common academic activities of the school. Additionally, they were located in a restricted area where only authorized individuals could enter and exit, which prevented me from fully exploring the educational processes.

Visits like these lead me to analyze and understand that the diversity presented by human beings is greater than we imagine. Regardless of the place in the world where we find ourselves, we will always encounter a plurality of behaviors, religions, races, ethnicities, languages, and personal characteristics that will shape our education. The main lesson that this journey teaches me is to continue valuing and respecting DIVERSITY, and to promote this respect in all of us, as when we manage to change stigmas, prejudices, and exclusive behaviors towards the differences of others, we eliminate the attitudinal barriers that hinder INCLUSION.
